Federal forecasters expect a wetter winter and more coastal storms across New Jersey and the Northeast

HAMILTON, New Jersey – October 10, 2026 – Dream Home Roofing, a Hamilton-based roofing contractor, today advised commercial property owners and facility managers across New Jersey to schedule roof inspections before winter. The guidance follows federal forecasts that a strong El Niño will bring a wetter season and more frequent coastal storms to the Northeast.

Federal Forecasters Expect a Wetter Winter in the Northeast

Forecasters expect more frequent coastal storms and nor'easters along the Atlantic seaboard this winter, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's regional El Niño outlook. Six seasonal forecast models point to above-average precipitation across the region. The agency notes that heavier rainfall raises the likelihood of ponding water and localized flooding.

Water that cannot drain has only one direction left to go.

Flat and Low-Slope Roofs Depend on Drainage to Shed Winter Rain

Flat and low-slope roofs, common on warehouses, retail centers and schools, rely on sound seams and clear drains to move water off the building. Dream Home Roofing's commercial roof inspections assess the points where these systems tend to fail:

  • Membrane condition and adhesion

  • Seams on TPO, EPDM and modified bitumen systems

  • Flashing at walls, parapets and penetrations

  • Gutters and internal drains

  • Signs of ponding, blistering and trapped moisture

Each finding is documented with photographs and written recommendations, so owners can act before a minor defect becomes a major expense.

"A flat roof rarely fails all at once," said a Dream Home Roofing spokesperson. "It fails at a seam or a drain that nobody examined in the fall. We would rather find that weakness in October than meet it during a January storm."

One failed seam can interrupt an entire operation.
